What is a chipknip?
Chipknip is an electronic purse, primarily intended for amounts up to approximately € 15. It’s like paying with a debit card, except chip payments are offline payments for small amounts. Chipknip is like an electronic purse. 

 

What is Prepaid Chipknip? 
Prepaid Chipknip is an electronic purse containing a predetermined amount of credit and a variant of the regular Dutch Chipknip for those who do not have a Dutch bank or giro account. Unlike Chipknip, Prepaid Chipknip is not linked to a particular person or account. After the card credit has been spent, the empty card cannot be recharged. Prepaid Chipknip is available in 4 denominations: € 5, € 10, € 20 and € 50.

 

For whom is Prepaid Chipknip intended?
Prepaid Chipknip was designed for people who do not have a Dutch bank or giro account and therefore have no bank card or chip card with Chipknip. For example, tourists, foreign businessmen and women or young people without a bank card or giro card.

 

I already have a Chipknip. Do I now also have to buy a Prepaid Chipknip? 
No, if you have a Chipknip you can keep using it and you don’t need Prepaid Chipknip. Prepaid Chipknip is intended for people who do not have a Chipknip. You can recognise the Chipknip by the gold-coloured square on your bank card or chip card.

 

How to pay with Prepaid Chipknip? 
Paying is fast and easy and similar to paying with Chipknip: you insert your Prepaid Chipknip card into the point-of-sale terminal. On the display, you see the amount to be paid, either typed in by the check-out operator or displayed automatically (from the cash register or terminal). After verifying the amount, all you have to do is press the 'Yes' button. In just a few seconds, you have made your chip payment and the exact amount is debited from your Chipknip.

 

Where can I pay with Prepaid Chipknip? 
You can use Prepaid Chipknip wherever Chipknip is accepted in the Netherlands. Prepaid Chipknip is therefore not just a card for car parks or lunches. The Chipknip points of sale are recognisable by the Chipknip logo.

 

What happens with the balance on my Prepaid Chipknip card if it is stolen or mislaid? 
When your Prepaid Chipknip card is stolen or lost, you unfortunately lose the amount on the card, just as when you lose cash. Therefore, be as careful with your Prepaid Chipknip as you are with your cash and credit or debit cards.

 

In which denominations is Prepaid Chipknip available? 
The (standard) Prepaid Chipknip is available in four different denominations: € 5, € 10, € 20 and € 50. The availability of the different denominations depends on the sales outlet.
Please note that: The credit balance on the Prepaid Chipknip may be different to the denomination amount! 


 

Is Prepaid Chipknip valid for an unlimited period? 
No, the date of validity is printed on the front of the Prepaid Chipknip, after the words: ‘valid thru’ The expiry date of the Prepaid Chipknip is specified on the front of the card, after the words ‘valid thru’. This date indicates that you can use the credit balance up to and including the specified date. After that, the balance is no longer valid. Why is the Prepaid Chipknip card packed in foil? 
From 1 January 2003, Prepaid Chipknip cards have been sold over the counter packed in foil. The individual packaging gives you the guarantee that a Prepaid is new and fully charged at the moment of sale. Prepaid Chipknips from a card vending machine are not packed in foil.

 

What is a card ID? 
The card ID is the unique number of the card. You need this number when you want to return Prepaid Chipknip if your card is not working properly for example, or if you want to redeposite your credit balance. The card ID is displayed on the front of the Prepaid Chipknip on the left under the chip.
