Questions about the credit balance on your Prepaid Chipknip

What is my credit balance?
The Prepaid Chipknip is available in different denominations. The standard denominations are € 5, € 10, € 20 and € 50. When you have paid with the Prepaid Chipknip a few times, you can check your balance at all point-of-sale terminals or charging terminals. To do this, please insert your card in the terminal and press the ‘?’ button. The credit balance will immediately appear on the display.

Why is the sales price or the balance on my unused card different to the amount specified on the card?
The balance on the Prepaid Chipknip may differ from the amount you paid for it. This is because of the ‘card fee’, the production costs for the card itself. The vendor can decide to pass on these card costs to you. Since 1 January 2003, there are two ways a vendor can pass on the card costs to customers:
When you buy your Prepaid Chipknip from a vending machine, the card costs have already been deducted from the amount – for example, you buy a card of € 20 and pay € 20. After deduction of a card fee of € 1.50, the credit stored on your Prepaid Chipknip amounts to € 18.50. The card fee is printed on the back of the card.
When you buy your Prepaid Chipknip ‘over the counter’, the value of the card is the same as the amount printed on the card. Then you pay the value of the card plus the card costs. Example: with a card of € 20 and a card fee of € 1.50 you therefore pay € 21.50 for an amount of € 20. In this case, the card fee is not printed on the back of the Prepaid Chipknip.

Is the balance on the Prepaid Chipknip valid for an unlimited period?
The expiry date of the Prepaid Chipknip is specified on the front of the card, after the words ‘valid thru’. This date indicates that you can use the credit balance up to and including the specified date. After that, the balance is no longer valid. You can read more about this in the Prepaid Chipknip consumer conditions.

How can I check my credit balance?
You can easily check the balance on your Prepaid Chipknip at all Chipknip point-of-sale terminals or charging terminals. Simply insert your card into the terminal and press the ‘?’ button. The credit balance will immediately appear on the display.

Can I charge a Prepaid Chipknip?
No, Prepaid Chipknip cannot be charged. At point-of-sale terminals or charging terminals you can check your balance by pressing the ‘?’ button.
