What is a Prepaid Chipknip?

Prepaid Chipknip is an electronic purse containing a predetermined amount of credit. It is a variant of the regular Dutch Chipknip for those who don’t have a Dutch bank or giro account. Unlike Chipknip Prepaid Chipknip is not linked to a particular person or account. After the card credit has been spent, the empty card cannot be recharged.

All Prepaid Chipknips can be recognised by the Chipknip logo and the word ‘Prepaid’, both displayed vertically on the right of the card. The standard Prepaid Chipknip is available in 4 denominations: € 5, € 10,  € 20 and € 50. Besides these standard denominations, there are also cards that can be issued by companies or institutions. These ‘Private Label Prepaid Chipknips’ are printed with logo or design of the issuing company. These cards can be also recognised by the standard properties of the Prepaid Chipknip, such as the Chipknip logo and the word ‘Prepaid’. The expiry date of the Prepaid Chipknip is displayed on the front of the card, after the words ‘valid thru’. This indicates that you can use the amount on the Prepaid Chipknip up to and including that date. After that date, the amount is no longer valid. Read more about this in the Prepaid Chipknip consumer conditions.
